Cherry Blossom Musical Arts presents "Art Music Live in the 21st Century", a two-part series of new music concerts. The first concert, on November 5, includes the world premiere of a song cycle by Brooklyn NY based composer Derek Healey, works by the internationally respected composer Tomas Svoboda, and a piece by Portland based composer Jack Gabel. This concert is made possible in part by a grant from Lane Arts Council with support from the City of Eugene Cultural Services Division and also from Cascadia Composers, a division of the National Association of Composers USA. The first concert in the "Art Music Live in the 21st Century" series is on November 5, 2010, at Central Lutheran Church, 1857 Potter Street, Eugene , 7:30 pm and features the following works: • The world premiere of "Thy Distant Fire: an Edgar Allen Poe Songbook" by British composer, former U of O professor and resident of Brooklyn NY, Derek Healey, written specifically for Cherry Blossom Artistic Director, soprano Nancy Wood. Mr. Healey's work has been performed world wide, most recently in Noto Cathedral in Italy. • Works by Czech-American composer Tomas Svoboda, whose work has been performed by such major orchestras as the Boston, Philadelphia, Cleveland, San Francisco, Monte-Carlo, Prague, Nagoya and national symphonies of Guatemala and Costa Rica. Svoboda's Brass Quintet will be performed by The Oregon Brass Quintet, a group of faculty artists from the University of Oregon School of Music led by Brian McWhorter. Nancy Wood will also perform Svoboda's song cycle "Summer Fragments" accompanied by Mr. Svoboda, who will also perform one of his newest pieces piece for solo piano. • "Mama's Song" for solo violin by Portland composer, Jack Gabel, performed by Eugene Symphony violinist Lisa McWhorter .
